Action Starts: Buhari Gives First Warning To APC Supporters
The All Progressive Congress (APC) president-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, has given his first warning to the party’s many supporters.
Nigerian Watch reports that the president-elect on Wednesday, reacting to the reported deaths trailing the celebration of his victory in parts of the country, urged his supporters to celebrate in a calm manner and not attack members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or destroy their property as they celebrate.
Buhari, who won the March 28 presidential poll, had, however, thanked Nigerians for choosing him and his party over the PDP.
The former military head of state noted that the mood of the country as well as its current state did not warrant the type of wild celebrations reportedly going on in some cities across the country.
Buhari stated that anybody that is happy with the victory of the APC in the presidential polls should not be involved in the molestation of opponents or the destruction of their property.
The retired military general further warned that whoever resorts to such acts of intimidation is not with him, pointing out that the election result showed Nigeria is now a mature democracy.
“Our country has now joined the community of nations that have used the ballot box to peacefully change an incumbent president in a free, fair election. To me, this is indeed historic, as the eyes of the world were focused on us to see if we could vote in a peaceful way and carry out a representative election in an orderly manner. We have proven, to the world, that we are a people who have embraced democracy and a people who seek a government by, for and of the people. We have put the one-party state behind us and have voted for a party and president that will serve and govern but never rule over you,” Buhari said.
General Buhari was declared the winner of Nigeria’s presidential elections, defeating the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan by 2.57 million votes. He won 15,424,921 votes or 53.95% of the valid votes cast, compared with 12,853,162 for President Jonathan, and was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Meanwhile, 25 people are reported to have died in Abuja, Kano, Makurdi and Niger yesterday while celebrating Buhari’s victory
