Reports have it that, two of President Goodluck Jonathan’s cousins have been kidnapped by yet to be identified gunmen at Akimpelai, Ogbia local government area of Bayelsa State.
The cousins, Patience Egbeni and Kate Eni were abducted by six gunmen, who attacked the riverbank community around 8.30am on Tuesday morning.
The women were reportedly taken from their provision stores located along the riverbank. A source close to the scene, said the two women were forced into the gunmen waiting speedboat.
Meanwhile, this incident occurred just few days to the handing over ceremony slated for May 29, which is also the country’s ‘Democracy Day.’ It was gathered that, a grand reception has been organised for President Jonathan and his extended family and friends.
The source said: “The victims are two maternal cousins of the President. We know that they have been preparing to welcome the President after the May 29 handover. Unless they are rescued before then, their dream of welcoming their brother will be a mirage.”
Police public relations officer (PPRO), Butswat Asinim, who confirmed the news, said the unknown gunmen were dressed in military camouflage. Asinim also confirmed that one of the victims, Egbeni, is 35-years-old.
“The gunmen were dressed in military camouflage. They went to the provision stores of the victims at the riverside and abducted them into a waiting speedboat,” he said.
According to security details in the area, the marine and anti-kidnapping squad of the police as well as the Joint Task Force (JTF), Operation Pulo Shield, have been informed of the crime
