The president of Akwa Ibom Mandate Union (AKMU) and human rights activist, Comrade Tom FredFish, in his contribution for Naij.com challenges the Akwa Ibom state governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio, to explain his role in the appointment of Moses Ekpo as the deputy PDP governorship candidate .
Moses Ekpo, a 77-year-old former commissioner of the military regime in Akwa Ibom state in 1987, was nominated deputy to Emmanuel Udom, the PDP governorship candidate, in January this year.
Millions of Akwa Ibom people were confused as to why Governor Akpabio preferred the 77-year-old Ekpo to other young, smart, intelligent and active PDP members.
In a press statement made available to the media two weeks ago, Mr. FredFish noted that it is rather shocking of Governor Akpabio to discard candidates such as Barr Emmanuel Enoidem, Aniekan Umanah, Engr Etido Inyang and Don Etim in favour of Moses Ekpo. Mr.FredFish urged young people not to keep silent.
“Three of the candidates Akpabio dumped for a relatively unknown Ekpo have been with the governor since the inception of his administration in 2007, except for Mr. Aniekan Umanah, who was appointed commissioner in 2008. A peep into their activities as commissioners completely justifies Akpabio‘s decision to keep them for 8 years in the cabinet. If a man survives an administration for eight years, it only proves one thing – he is very loyal and dependable. But why was none of them chosen?” he questioned.
Mr. FredFish stated that hard-working and loyal young people are usually used and dumped instead of being rewarded a high position. Moreover, Ekpo’s apointment may be followed by serious consequences, he warned.
“First of all, the decision may affect Goodluck Jonathan’s chances at March 28 presidential election. The PDP at the federal level has described Buhari as incapable to rule because of his age. Consequently, Ekpo’s apointment makes Buhari an easy sell.
“Secondly, dumping loyal and youthful aides for a septuagenarian portrays the PDP as youth-unfriendly, like the APC. Moreover, they say the youth is tomorrow’s future. If our capable youths are not given the opportunity to govern then there is a serious cause for concern as it may discourage the youth from serving the party faithfully”, Mr. FredFish said.
The youth activist, who used legal means to force Tell Magazine to apologize to Akpabio over a libelous publication in 2010, stated that, though Akpabio might have had good reasons for nominating Ekpo, “there would have been civility in his act if he had come out to clearly explain his reasons not only to those loyalist but to the whole world, since these men might be deeply hurt by the governor and party’s action
