Nigeria’s Maternal Mortality Down By 20% – Jonathan
With the elections edging closer (2 days left), President Goodluck Jonathan may be in the driving seat to win the hearts of the electorates come March 28.
This comes hours after the President announced in Otukpo, Benue State that Nigeria’s maternal mortality rate had reduced by 20% following his administration’s effort in the health sector.
Jonathan who was represented by Vice President Namadi Sambo in his address at the ground breaking ceremony of the new teaching hospital and Federal University of Agriculture, College of Medicine, Akwete campus in Otukpo yesterday, March 25, said there was a significant drop of the disturbing trend.
The president said the reduction was made possible by his administration policy by ensuring that pregnant women get free medical attention in all government hospitals with the introduction of the Mama kit and N5,000 incentive.
He assured that the Otukpo project when completed would serve as a learning facility for the college of science located in the same vicinity while adding that the idea to site the hospital in the area was muted in order to bring tertiary health services closer to people at grassroots.
Also addressing the people, Senate President, David Mark said the project would remain one of the most outstanding legacies of the Jonathan administration as he urged Nigerians to vote for him again
Governor Gabriel Suswam noted that the location of the hospital and the medical school were as a result efforts by Mark for his Idoma kinsmen.
Meanwhile, records show that in 2013, the country accounted for 13% of global maternal deaths with an estimated 36, 000 Nigerian women dying from pregnancy related issues each year
